User-Guide
----------
Welcome to the Pro-Football Demo disk.
There is little need for a User-Guide with this program,
as every aspect of the program is covered in the detailed
help facility. However, there are several things that you
need to know in order to use Pro-Football to it's full
potential - this document tells you those things ...
****************
* Introduction *
****************
If you've used a football prediction system on your Amiga
before, you're probably filled with dread and doubt at
the moment. Relax!
The reason I've written Pro-Football is that I know that
feeling only too well - all of the ones I could find were
difficult to use, or were VERY time consuming, or just
didn't do the job they were meant to do!
From the start, Pro-Football was to be different from the
rest ... I'm very pleased with the result - I hope you are
too!
********************
* Unusual Features *
********************
Many features are as you would expect - there are some
however that are quite unique, and others that appear to be
missing ...
>> Where are the league tables? Inside your Amiga!
It occured to me that whilst league tables are great for
seeing how your favourite team is doing, they aren't
much cop when it comes to prediction - so why bother
using the standard system at all? Pro-Football uses a
completely custom built points system internally. These
tables aren't visible to the user though - the idea of
a prediction tool is to let the computer worry about
things like that - if you want to see the tables, buy a
newspaper!
>> Speedy entry! Entering fixture lists into a football
predictor is a very time consuming business - until now!
Pro-Football lets you do it in minutes.
>> Useable Predictions! Everything is set up to make life
easier for you. Predictions are presented in a way that
fits in with both pools and fixed odds betting.
>> Accurate Predictions! Obviously a computer cannot take
into account factors such as weather, injuries,
players personal problems etc, but Pro-Football does
look at as many factors as possible.
In fact each match is assessed 4 times, each using a
different method to ensure maximum success.
>> Easy to use!
>> Why aren't bookies odds included in the calculations?
Involving the would make it easier to make predictions,
but they wouldn't be genuine independant opinions.
The way things are, if a match is predicted to be an away
win AND the odds offered reflect this, then you know that
Pro-Football is probably correct. If on the other hand,
there is a large difference (eg: Pro-Football says AWAY,
but the odds suggest HOME) then there could be cause for
caution. One point to remember is that a winner at 5-4 is
better than a 10-1 loser!
The list goes on and on - you'll discover more and more
features as you progress.
*******************
* Getting Started *
*******************
Make a backup copy! See your Workbench manual if you are
unsure on how to do this.
Pro-Football will run automatically when the computer is
switched on or reboot with the Pro-Football disk in the
drive. Please note that the disk should be left
Write-Enabled (the little plastic slider on the disk in
the closed position), otherwise the program won't work
properly.
This demo version is not hard-drive installable, although
the full version is.
**************************
* The Prediction Process *
**************************
Pro-Football is a radically different product - and as such,
you need to forget what you already know about prediction
programs, and get into the Pro-Football way of thinking.
Detailed information on how you do everything is included in
the Help pages throughout the program, so I think the best
thing to do now is to give a rough over-view of the various
steps that you will be taking. I'll do this by explaining
what I've been doing, and when each week ...
MONDAY - Get Mid-Week, Weekend and Pools betting coupons
from bookies.
Entered details of matches taking place during
the week - the details are stored in similar
lists to those on the slips - A Main List
(Long List), and several Sub-Lists (Sections
list, Mini Sections etc).
It's then possible to ask for any type of
prediction you want. In this example I requested ..
5 best draws on the long list.
Best prediction (1,2 or X) from each section
of the Mini-Sections List.
Best home in each section of the Sections List.
It's then sit back & wait time!
WEDNESDAY - All mid-week matches had been played - entered
results from teletext.
Pro-Football then updates it's statistics.
I then started again, using weekend coupons,
except this time, one of the sub-lists was the
Pools list - obviously in this case, the prediction
you ask for is the list of likely draws on the
pools list.
SUNDAY - Entered results from Saturday & Sunday.
MONDAY - Deja Vu! Back to the beginning.
Of course not everyone will want to make that many
predictions, but remember - the more results you can provide
the more accurate the predictions will be.
Pro-Football handles non-league games as well as it does
league ones, and the statistical info held is geared up
for this - so don't worry about using Pro-Football for
cup-ties etc.

* It's Easy! *
**************
Whenever a menu is displayed on screen, help is only a
keypress away - just press your HELP key. The words
HELP AVAILABLE will be displayed on screen to remind you
that the information exists. The help pages shown will be
relevant to the section of the program that you are
entering. The instructions provided in the HELP pages are
actually for the full version of Pro-Football, but
most of it also applies to the demo.
Some of the instructions may seem a little on the complex
side - rest assured, the reality isn't that bad!
Once you've used Pro-Football, it'll all fall into place!
If it doesn't, then don't worry - as a registered user of
the program, you are entitled to unlimited help.
Simply write, describing in detail what it is that you are
unsure of, and I'll do my best to help by return of post.
(While not essential, a SAE would be appreciated!)

* Problems & Ideas *
********************
This is the very first version of Pro-Football.
The future of the program depends on you!
What do you like about it? Dislike?
What can be done to improve it?
Let me know!
Similarly, if you discover any bugs, or run into any
problems at all when using Pro-Football, do get in touch.
I always answer letters same day.
Send to: Ali Prior, 10 Lovell Park Heights, Leeds, LS7 1DP.
*******************
* And Finally ... *
*******************
The next few months are going to be fairly busy with
improvements being made to all of the Pro-Prediction
range - but I am on the look out for new ideas.
Is there a computer program that you've always wanted,
but can't get because it doesn't exist?
If so, let me know (it doesn't have to be gambling
related) - perhaps you'll see your idea develop further!
